The New Name
As we look toward the future, we feel God inspiring our calling as a church. After a long process of prayer and consideration, the Leadership Team, with counsel and guidance from our Trustees, have felt confirmation to change the name of our community from Hitchin Christian Centre to Zeo Church. This is much more than a name to us: it’s something God is speaking over us as a people.
What’s the big idea?
We believe that God has made us a passionate church, a community of God’s people on fire for him. A church where every woman, man, boy and girl comes alive with a passion for God, passion for people, and passion for living a transformed life.
And we believe that with a church on fire with God-fuelled passion, anything is possible! When someone comes to our church, we believe they encounter a community that is home, supernatural, hope, alive, and real – offering God’s transformation to a world that desperately needs it. And ultimately, where what we experience on earth will look a lot like heaven.
What does Zeo mean?
Zeo is a Biblical Greek word, used in the New Testament by Paul in Romans 12:11, “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord.”
“Zeo” is the word here translated as “spiritual fervour” – it means “passion”, or literally to be “boiling hot” or “on fire” for God. So “Zeo Church” is God’s people alive with a passion for God and for his Kingdom.
It can be helpful to associate Zeo with these ideas: passion, energy, spark, glowing, on fire, enthusiasm, wholehearted, contagious, burning hot, fervour, bubbling over, “loving this”, fully alive, excitement, pushing limits, vibrant, zeal, thriving, nothing held back. Bringing passion is what God does. He demonstrates his passionate love for each of us, pursuing us, giving up his life for us – and in doing so, he’s opened up a big wide future for each of us, a new story that turns everything around, a new life for us with the power to live passionately for him.
We believe that God has given us a name which encapsulates what he is speaking over us, an identity we’re excited to live up to. Imagine every area of our lives being zeo: loving with zeo, giving with zeo, worshipping with zeo, praying with zeo, serving with zeo, working with zeo, responding with zeo… etc.
And actually we believe this new identity was birthed when the church was born – a handful of people, burning with a passion for Jesus, and meeting together in a front room on Bearton Avenue – and we’ve carried this passion with us all this time.
Quirky fact: the original Greek for Zeo is “ζέο” and is pronounced something along the lines of “dzeh’-o”. As is normal practice, we’ll be anglicising Zeo to our alphabet and we’ll say “zeo” like in “zeal”.
How about “Anything Is Possible”?
“Anything is possible” is our new tag line which will sometimes appear alongside “Zeo Church”, or on its own. Jesus said: “With God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26).
The phrase “anything is possible” inspires and builds our faith as Christians. But it also speaks very much to people who don’t yet know Jesus.
Underneath everything, people are longing for belonging, hope and purpose – and we know that these things are found in Jesus. “Anything is possible” speaks to the unanswered questions people carry (e.g. “Isn’t there more to life than this?” “Can I find happiness? Love? Security?” “How do I find fulfilment?” “Can I make a difference in the world?” “Is there a way through this?”), and offers the possibility of a new, passion-filled, God-shaped story for their lives.
We hope “anything is possible” will capture the imagination of those who wouldn’t usually consider church – it’s a phrase we put out into the world, like a lifebelt thrown out into the water for them to grab onto and be drawn into safety.
We’ll launch the new name in September 2018.
