Mother Teresa once said:
“I must be willing to give whatever it takes to do good to others. This requires that I be willing to give until it hurts. Otherwise, there is no true love in me, and I bring injustice, not peace, to those around me.”
Challenging words! If you’ve been coming to HCC for a while then you’ll know that around once a year we hold a special Gift Day where together, as the family of God at HCC, we seek to stretch our faith by (1) giving a generous, sacrificial one off financial gift, and (2) seeking to increase our existing monthly giving to the church.
Our 2014 Gift Day is taking place on Sunday 15th June. This is of course, Father’s Day. And how apt? What a great opportunity to give thanks to Father God for His generosity to us by responding in kind? I’m very aware that this can be a very sensitive subject sometimes inspiring negative feelings of guilt (‘I can’t give very much’) or anger (‘the church is always after your money’).
None of those feelings are necessary or true. The Bible outlines some healthy principals of giving – and benefits – that I’d encourage you to pray through in this special month of June.
- Give generously (Proverbs 11:25) – giving breaks the power of selfishness. Give what you can – not what you can’t (Deuteronomy 16:17) – we can only give out of the money that God has given us.
- Give sacrificially (2 Corinthians 8:1-5) – we must be prepared to go without something we ‘want’ in order that others might have what they ‘need’.
- Give joyfully (2 Corinthians 9:7) – be thrilled that you can give to enable the work of God.
And remember too the blessings of giving – (1) You can never out-give God (Luke 6:38), (2) It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35), and (3) God will take care of you (2 Corinthians 9:8).
Thank you so much for playing your part in the ongoing Kingdom of God adventure at Hitchin Christian Centre.
