Hitchin Christian Centre

“It was during a particularly chilly June afternoon that Churches together in Hitchin gathered in Bancroft Gardens for ‘Party in the Park 2010’. Despite the cold and wind – my first few minutes were spent trying to prevent the sound team’s gazebo blowing away in the wind until I was replaced by a mic stand and some gaffer tape – this was an enjoyable afternoon with lots to do, especially for the family.

The children were kept amused with a variety of activities including face painting, a bouncy castle, a magic act from our very own Paul Coombs and plenty of fairground-style games. Those of us without kids had a chance to look a the various stalls and displays from some of the other churches in the town and catch up with friends from the wider Christian community.

There was also plenty of free food on offer from the excellent barbecue team – indecently the only people there still wearing just t-shirts - and if you stayed as long as I did you would have been treated to various folk coming round trying to get rid of the spare free fairy cakes, of which the sound and music team were only too happy to help out with.

I particularly enjoyed variety of music that kept the party going throughout the afternoon with several churches bringing their groups along. All the groups sounded good and gave the people of Hitchin the chance to hear the many different ways in which we worship musically. My personal highlights were the enthusiastic turn from the HCC Youth Band, the beautiful classical sound from St Mary’s Choir and of course the chance to hear the wonderful Kym Mazelle singing ‘Shackles’!

Overall, for me the day was a great example of God’s community in our town coming together, enjoying fellowship with each other and sharing who we are with the wider community in Hitchin.”
