Over a hundred at Holiday Club
Way back at the end of July, the Spotlight Holiday Club team gathered to welcome the first few kids to "Rocky's Plaice" for the next 4 days. We knew that God would do amazing things in and through us during the week but no one quite expected what was in store. We were blessed to work with over 100 different kids during the Holiday Club, with around 70 each day - a record for the annual event. Many of the children had little or no previous experience of church and a good number had attended our Playbox play group in the past.
Spotlight Holiday Club was a wonderful week of great fun and laughter, packed with team games, action songs, quizes, crafts, jokes, crazy challenges and lots of cheering! All the children that came along had a great time and really threw themselves into the fun and games. Each day Sharon and Sam shared part of the story of Pentecost and the Acts of the Apostles, with members of the team giving testimonies about how God has worked in and through them by His Holy Spirit.
The Spotlight team were superb, lead with tireless enthusiasm by Sharon and Sam. Several of the team had done little or no children's work before this week and there were a few nervous faces at the start of the Holiday Club. However, everyone had a great time and really got into the spirit of the week. Some of the most unlikely people were cheering on their team, jumping about to "Flabbergasted" (our daily morning work-out song), getting involved in crazy and messy challenges and loving every minute of it. A few people had planned to come along and help for one or two days and ended up staying for the entire week!
At the end of the week, the entire team was buzzing about an amazing week and most of us would have happily done it all again the next week. Here's the thoughts of one of the team - one of the newest members of our church family - Juliet...
"As a newbie to the HCC I added my name to Sharon's list of helpers with more than a little trepidation. Single, childless and newly reunited to faith, not really sure what value I could bring to a group of children learning about God. My thought was perhaps I could add a willing adult eye, and begin to repay the community that has been so welcoming to me.
The children came with such joy and enthusiasm it was only minutes before my inner child took over. Sharon and Sam did a fantastic job of keeping adults and youngsters on track and I now have 'Flabbergasted' in my mind most days. To be fair I am not sure whether the kids or helpers had the most fun.
It was a pleasure to spend those few precious hours learning and playing with these kids and developing my friendships with the leaders. I truly feel they have blessed my summer as a result.
If you feel God directing you to do more with the HCC, then I can definately suggest Spotlight.
Thanks everyone for such an amazing couple of days, I am looking forward to the next one already."
