Ask the Pastor: Which Bible translation is best?

Q: Which current translation of the Bible gives the closest meaning to the original writing/meaning?

A: Hi - thanks for the qustion and it's a tough one. The problem is the new translations use more up to date understanding and translation methods than the good old "King James " version. They are not neccesarily better versions, just more up-to-date!

I moved from the KJ to the NIV about 15 years ago. Then moved to the New Living Translation about 8 years ago, and still use this now. There are multiple choices these days - it is a matter of preference! Remember most importantly it is God's Word - therefore is to be read. When you have questions on things you don't understand find an exciting church where you can discuss and learn what God wants you to know. Other than that, I recommend you buy the NLT version and start reading Mark's Gospel.

    Hope that helps.

    Tony
