Ask the Pastor: What is the "lying pen of scribes?"
Q: Jeremiah 8:8 says "What is this holy book of God? It is nothing but a pack of falsehoods written by the lying pen of scribes." What does the Bible mean by this?
A: Hi, thanks for the question - it could sound very baffling! However, this is my take on this verse.
The "lying pens of the scribes" means that the scribes wrote misinterpretations of the Law and not actually altered the text of the Law. People should have gone to check what was written in the Law, to know the requirements of God and not listened to the scribes. But they chose instead to believe in this corrupted version. It's like folk who corrupt and misquote the Bible. Read it for yourself and see for yourself what God is saying!
