Ask the Pastor: Was my conversion real?

Q: Everyone I know can remember the date, place and all the details of when they gave their life to Jesus and first said the prayer. I can only remember where and who was there - I can't even remember how I felt afterwards. Does that mean I didn't really give my life properly?

A: Hi, and thank you for sending your question concerning “did my conversion really happen?” This is not an uncommon concern, particularly if someone you know has had a dramatic experience – like the Apostle Paul on the Damascus road – and starts to make you feel inferior and doubt your own encounter with God!

Firstly, not everyone has a dramatic experience when they receive Jesus Christ into their lives for the first time. In fact, it is more rare than you think. I remember a lovely Elder’s wife at HCC when questioned about the date and time and how she felt at the time saying, “It wasn’t sudden or dramatic! It was more like the tide coming in, gradual and almost unnoticed. It one day clicked with me that I was 90% there, and I just believed in my heart and asked God in. My life has never been the same!”

So, worry not my friend – and ignore the comments “that you must know the moment and the situation, or else you might not be a Christian after all!” I don’t remember how it felt at the time I was physically born into my family – I know it caused my mother a lot of pain – but I was oblivious to the moment. Plenty of people remember though, and have reminded me many times!

So, chin up, follow God, read His Word, Fellowship with His people, and tell others the difference today He has made in your life!

    Blessings,

    Tony
